-Everett True, Melody Maker, March 18th, 1989In 1992, Nirvana's breakthrough anthem, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' introduced a new underground sound to the mainstream music world. The record-breaking sales and global recognition that followed should have been a welcomed payoff for the hard-working punk band. Instead, that bright optimism quickly faded into bitter dissatisfaction, as the trio became conflicted about their unexpected success, and about having an audience that was the epitome of everything they had attempted to rebel against.Nirvana's sonic catapult from obscurity to international stardom and their chart-topping success changed the face of rock music world-wide. In Nirvana: The Chosen Rejects, the authors have used a wealth of sources, including personal interviews with Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, in order to reconstruct Nirvana's meteoric rise and the subsequent fall of their troubled lead singer. The result is a front row perspective of the musical influences that helped nurture Nirvana's seminal sound, the stories about the creation of their albums, and the ideas that shaped their songs. Nirvana: The Chosen Rejects also contains a comprehensive discography and an A-Z listing of every Nirvana song officially released.Kurt St.

This was a ridiculously fun reading experience, for more than one reason.First of all, it focused a lot on the music. There was talk of other things that plagued the band; Cobain's drug problem, various marriages and girlfriends and the like, but for the most part, it was all about the music. About the songs, about how they were conceived and their feelings on the music itself, which I thought was pretty rad.As well as that, the way it was written was so optimistic. It wasn't depressing until the end, really, and most of the time when you read anything Nirvana-related, it's depressing through-and-through, but this one captured a sort of light-hearted spirit (up until the bit that covered April of '94, of course) that was pretty great. And it was just such a nice read.
It made me happy, for the most part. I’ve really gotten into Nirvana over the last couple years after being introduced to them in college, but I really didn’t know a whole lot about them until recently. Aware of my ignorance but not really wanting to wade through a bunch of competing opinions and Courtney Love conspiracy theories online, I was immediately intrigued when I saw Nirvana: The Chosen Rejects as part of a display of books about rock at my local library, so I checked it out immediately. This book offers a very easy to I’ve really gotten into Nirvana over the last couple years after being introduced to them in college, but I really didn’t know a whole lot about them until recently. Aware of my ignorance but not really wanting to wade through a bunch of competing opinions and Courtney Love conspiracy theories online, I was immediately intrigued when I saw Nirvana: The Chosen Rejects as part of a display of books about rock at my local library, so I checked it out immediately. This book offers a very easy to follow account of Nirvana, from the members’ early lives through the aftermath of Kurt’s death. It is written with a heavy reliance on quoting old interviews, and while this was a little off-putting at first, I learned to appreciate the close and honest impression this added to events that happened a decade or more before the book’s writing. On at least a surface level it felt like I got to know who Kurt, Krist, and Dave were in the late 80s and early 90s.
At times the structure of the chapters seemed a little odd, such as an entire chapter dedicated to basically everything that was connected to In Utero, rather than breaking it apart to devote one chapter to the album’s creation, and another to the subsequent tour. Little things like this and the occasionally bland writing caused The Chosen Rejects to drag a bit at times, but ultimately the book works even with these minor issues. As a Nirvana fan who wasn’t even a year old when Kurt Cobain died, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes Nirvana’s music or is just interested in learning about one of the most influential bands of the late twentieth century. Nirvana, the Chosen Rejects.
It’s a nonfiction book about the band Nirvana. The theme of this book is about to not abuse drugs to get out of hard problems. This book is about the band members of Nirvana, the creation of the band, and the long process of recording albums. The book also follows the band on tours.
One of the band members, Krist, is an interesting character. He was the bassist of Nirvana.

He listened to Alt bands of the 80’s but then into some harder stuff. He is a powerhouse of a bassist, and is unpredictable. Kurt and Krist we’re best friends cause they were essentially the same people. This is definitely one of my favorite books because this is one of my favorite books, and I am a music junkie. If you love music, and Nirvana this is definitely a worth a read.
Throughout the book you see Kurt transform from this introvert to an extrovert and eventually, his battle with substance abuse. It shows all his problems with marriages, girlfriends, and band members.
This book shows all the hardships and accomplishments of the band. The book however, is written very optimistically until the end.
The ending is sad, if you easily cry you probably would. I don’t cry ever but I got a little teary eyed. This book shows the hard life of a rockstar. The ‘rockstar life’ per say. It also shows how this life can destroy you eventually.
This book is a masterpiece of hardships, happy moments, and struggle. I definitely recommend this book.
I'm an spanish speaker, but I read this book in english, I bought it a few years ago, so it was a big travel. I realy enjoy how the ideas were put together to make everything like a big story based on journal investigation. And to see how things were in the beginins of the nineties. For some generations Kurt was a winny, but for me was someone who struggled and showed how was that decade, turn anger and dispair in art, but most of it was from the bias of DYS, and I love it. The point of view on this book is third person. This book would be a narration, a narration is the telling of a story of events that happened in chronological order. The stories about each member in this book is very entertaining. Nirvana: The Chosen Rejects is narration because it starts off from the bottom of each members lives then works its way up to the end of the band. This book was very good!
I rate this book five stars because it had a lot of information I did not already know! I also like that this book had all the citing of the information given in the book, so I know where it came from. There is nothing I do not like about this book, it is very organized! I also got some new music to listen to by Nirvana, because at the same time this book also reviewed some of their music, said what their songs are about and it said the band's opinions on the songs. I'm just going to repeat was previously said, but I loved this book because it focused more on the music and how certain songs came to be, and also because it took a personal look into the band. It started with the genesis of the band, the introduction of Dave Grohl, and followed their short yet brilliant run chronologically, and even covered what happened after the passionate star that was Nirvana had been snuffed out, and what the surviving members went on to.A complete and exhaustive I'm just going to repeat was previously said, but I loved this book because it focused more on the music and how certain songs came to be, and also because it took a personal look into the band.
